Here are a multitude of free treasure hunt ideas. Much of the content is oriented to a pirate themed treasure hunt, but mostly it applies to all types of hunts. I have also included tips on how to create your treasure map, age metal parts, and common treasure hunt scenarios.
In general plan your treasure hunt starting with the treasure, just like a real pirate. You get your treasure, find a place to hide it, and make a map that leads to it.
Hiding the Treasure - If possible I suggest acquiring your treasure and hiding it as a first step. Nothing will help your treasure map making skills more than having actual hidden treasure.
Plan the Scenario - Basically this is deciding how the treasure hunters will find the treasure. Will they use a GPS, a compass, or just the map. Perhaps they will need to solve a riddle, or find a clue to make sense of the map.
Plan the Route - The treasure hunters will likely navigate to a series of waypoints to arrive at the treasure. There are many tips and tricks to selecting good waypoints.
Make the Treasure Map - Once the route is planned, its time to create the actual treasure map.
