Making a Treasure Map

Once you have a route selected to the treasure, its time to enhancing your draft map by coming up with interesting names for things. You can also enhance the adventure with ideas from the Planning section. You may plan on drafting a few versions of your map on scratch paper first. However in the end perfection is not needed, as spelling mistakes, disproportions, and bad artwork just adds to the fun.

If your looking for a very authentic look, use natural chamois skin. Its the next closest thing to genuine parchment. Parchment is not actually paper, it is really made of animal skins like chamois, but perhaps a little thinner.

If your willing to slip a little on the historical accuracy, you can create a pseudo parchment paper from a paper bag. To make this pseudo parchment, I recommend using a paper grocery bag. You should age the paper and soften it by doing the following: Crumple the paper and smash it by stepping on it. Flatten back out, and repeat several times. Then rinse the paper in warm water, crumpling it and flattening it several more times. To darken the paper, boil a half cup of water in the microwave. Add 2 or 3 teabags and wait a few minutes for it to steep. Then stir it up a bit and toss your map paper in the tea. Once cool, squeeze gently, and let dry. After the map is drawn you can try uneven swaths of cooking spray, candle wax, charcoal, dirt, and whatever else. With treasure maps, the worse shape the it is in, the more authentic it appears.
